6 Archeological Finding that are Hard to Explain

Many ancient mysteries cannot be solved due to a number of reasons, primarily the loss of evidence and data and the destruction of archeological monuments. However, according to National Geographic Archeologist Frederik Hiebert, we're about to make more wonderful discoveries which can reveal some secrets from the past. Below are 6 mysterious cases that can't be explained in the 21st century.

1. The Tomb of the Red Queen, Mexico
discoveries
Archeologists found a burial chamber in Palenque (the Maya city) in 1994. In it, they discovered a coffin with a woman's remains covered with red powder. Pearls and nephritis collections were also found inside. Around the skull, there was a diadem and there were pieces of what initially was a funeral mask. According to studies, the Red Queen was around 60 years old. This was an interesting find as usually, power could only be inherited by men and women were not usually honored in such a way, whereby they would be buried with treasures similar to the ones found in the Red Queen's coffin.
2. Man of La Venta, Mexico, 1947
discoveries
This photo depicts a huge Olmec stone head in La Venta Mexico. During the excavation, 17 heads were found, and as expected, many questions were asked. Archeologists wondered how the people of that time managed to create such big and heavy statues, what tools they used and how they were able to transport the materials.
3. Winchester rifle, model of 1873
discoveries
This Winchester was found leaning against a tree at Great Basin National Park in Utah. In the 1870s, a number of mines and ranches began to appear in the area. What's surprising is that no one has touched this rifle for over 100 years.
4. Lost City in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa
discoveries
Traveler and inventor The Great Farini wrote a report about a mysterious city that he had found in the desert in 1885. He had passed the report to Great Britain's Royal Geographical Society and published a book where he described his findings in detail. Farini then claimed that the city was built in the form of an arc and some parts were hidden under sand. Professor A.J. Clement who had researched the story assumed that the city described in the report was a set of monumental rocks resembling walls but after another expedition to the Kalahari, scientists found rocks that were described in Farini's report. However, it is still unknown whether these walls are real or fake.

5. The Tomb of Alexander the Great
discoveries
In one of the versions regarding Alexander the Great's tomb, the commander's body was put in a golden coffin that was sent to Memphis and then to Egypt's Alexandria where he disappeared. It was said that Alexander's coffin was found in Sidon, Lebanon, as the warrior in a lions' helmet depicted on the coffin had very much resembled the commander. Later, it was discovered that it was the coffin of the King of Sidon, however. Nevertheless, the search did not stop there. In 2014, a skeleton was found in Central Macedonia and scientists believe that it may be Alexander's skeleton. However, we'll only know once a DNA test has been conducted.
6. Mummies found in San Bernardo, Columbia
discoveries
What draws the crowds to the Columbian city of San Bernado each year? A mystery that scientists have yet to figure out. In 1957, a local cemetery flooded and people had to remove the remains from the area. Workers were amazed as some corpses had naturally mummified in their coffins. Many locals believe that it was due to a special diet which contained the chayote fruit, but it still doesn't explain why all of the clothes had also been preserved.
