4 Age-Defying Makeovers

Sometimes, all it takes to look years younger is a change in your hair style and color. The below transformations turned back the clock for these four, real women who were guided by the professionals at the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City. Learn some of their tips below:

1. Catherine Winters, 58, writer: From plain...to head turning
hairstyles

Before: Catherine's bangs overpowered her beautiful eyes and bone structure. Her jet-black shade was too severe against her fair-skin. This brought out her wrinkles and brown spots.

After: Layers at the crown create fullness, enhancing her features. If not layered, fine hair can look flat and straggly. So to warm up her complexion, and take the focus off her freckles, a lighter base color and caramel highlights were used. While not a big difference, it's just enough to make her look softer and younger, while allowing her eyes to pop out.

2. Maria Perez, 56, legal assistant: From severe...to sexy
hairstyles

Before: Maria's hair was long, but shapeless making it hard for her to style, which is why she often pulled it back. Its tone was orangy. This is a common scenario when women with dark hair opt for a lighter shade.

After: Face-framing layers add softness and accentuate Maria's eyes and cheekbones. Longer layers throughout the rest of her hair build youthful body and movement. The fullness also gives her face a little life. To counteract the brassiness, her hair was brought back to her natural rich brunette color woven in golden highlights to boost brightness and keep the hair from looking flat. The depth of the shade makes her skin appear more radiant and her eye color more intense.

3. Eileen Gorzelic, 55, executive secretary: From safe... to stylish
hairstyles

Before: Eileen's bob was blunt and staid. It didn't show off her prominent cheekbones and as you would expect, when blondes highlight their hair, it often becomes too light, creating a lack of contrast which washes out fair skin.

After: Taking the length up a notch and adding layers updated and softened her look. The rich, buttery highlights and subtle mid-tone lowlights create depth and the illusion of thickness. This also helped give her skin a lovely glow.

4. Leslie Egan, 40, homemaker: From mousy... to modern
hairstyles

Before: Leslie wore her hair the same way for 30-plus years. She was ready for a change! But rather than chopping off her long locks, they gave her a sexy update.

After: Stronger bangs were cut, giving her a fuller fringe, which is better at hiding forehead furrows. A base shade of rich chestnut brown and camel highlights helps brighten her skin tone, and keeping it close to her natural color makes it low-maintenance for busy moms.
