How to Fold Your Sweaters

When it comes to closet organizing, there is a universal truth: the bulkier an item, the less likely it is to be neatly stored. For many people, there is no article of clothing heavier or more cumbersome than sweaters. It's no surprise that they end up piled on a shelf or shoved in a storage bin. However, the truth is it is possible to neatly fold your sweaters. Want an easy way to keep your garments in shape? These simple tips brought to you by Karin Socci will have your sweaters uniformly arranged and easy to find in no time.

Step 1: Forgo the hanger

While it may be tempting to put your sweaters on hangers to get them out of the way, doing so will shorten their lifespan. In fact, Socci, a Master Certified KonMari Consultant and owner of The Serene Home says: “Sweaters should be folded whenever possible to avoid stretching them out on hangers.”

Step 2: Meet in the middle

After laying your sweater on a flat surface, divide it vertically in thirds with your hands by folding one side in toward the center of the garment, then repeat with the other side. The two sides of the sweater should meet in the middle and the cuffs of the sleeves should be touching the sweater's hem.

Step 3: Fold from the bottom up

Sweaters are folded in the same way that shirts are folded. The only difference is that if they are bulky, they may require fewer folds. So folding your sweater horizontally so the bottom hem hits the midpoint of the garment works well. Then fold upward from the bottom once again until the sweater takes the shape of a small rectangle.

Step 4: Align vertically and store

As opposed to putting your sweaters on top of one another, align them vertically so that you can see them better and have an easier time pulling them out when you need. Socci suggests lining them up like books on a shelf. She adds that if you stack them, “you’ll either never wear the ones on the bottom or you’ll destroy all your folding to get to that one [you want].”
