Chinese Traditional Savory Snacks

Fancy Chinese? When we think of Chinese snacks, fortune cookies usually come to mind. But there's more to crunchy Chinese snacks than just this little pastry! Try your hand at this traditional savory cookie recipe.

Prep Time 1 hour
Serves: 10
Difficulty Level: Medium
Ingredients for crispy snacks:
Salt - 1/2 tsp.
Black sesame - 1/2 tsp.
Eggs - 1
Vegetable oil - 2 tbsp, plus more for frying
Water - 1/2 cup
Method of preparing the crispy snacks:
  1. In a bowl, combine the flour, oil, salt, egg, and sesame. Once crumbly, add the water in small portions, making sure to mix well between each.
  2. Knead the dough until it is uniform. It will be a bit sticky. Let rest covered 10 minutes. Knead again to form a smooth bowl, and let rest, covered, for another 30 minutes.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a 16x240inch rectangle, as thin as possible. Use the video as guidance for rolling techniques.
  4. Cut the rectangle lengthwise along the longer side to divide it into 2 even rectangles, as shown in the video. Lay them on top of each other and repeat. You will have 4 strips.
  5. Fold each strip lengthwise and slice it very thinly from the folded side, making sure not to slice all the way to the fold. Divide each strip into 1 1/2-inch-wide pieces, as shown in the video.
  6. For each 1 1/2-inch piece, open the fold and stick each corner on top of its opposite to shape it into the final shape. Use the video as guidance.
  7. Over a medium-low flame, heat oil in a pan for deep frying. When it reaches 260°F, start adding the dough. Let it float for a minute, then flip.
  8. Once golden, let cool on a towel-lined tray and enjoy the crunch!
Chef's Tip:
Don't skip letting the dough rest. This will make sure your final product comes out right.
